Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist and international observer Movses Ghazaryan commented on remarks made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio about the possible imminent collapse of Syria’s ruling regime.

“Rubio’s statement—that representatives of the Syrian government didn’t pass their check within the norms adopted by the US government—is intended to demonstrate, so to speak, the integrity of the US government, which allegedly does not work with terrorists. We all understand perfectly well that the biographical background of many figures in the current Syrian government is, to put it mildly, highly questionable in terms of international law, including international humanitarian law. These are people who are still involved in terrorist activities.

Such statements are intended to show that legitimacy is important to them, and during Trump’s latest tour, various experts also pointed out that his administration is supposedly reshaping American foreign policy in the Middle East— he is ready to work with everyone, provided they remain loyal to him. However, there are still visible moments when it is necessary to show some integrity,” Ghazaryan said.

Despite the current Syrian authorities facing legitimacy issues, official Washington appears to be using Rubio’s statements as a means to exert pressure on them for its own interests, Ghazaryan noted.
