Russia has not been forcing Armenia to choose regarding the EAEU, it is responding to the statements and policies of the Armenian authorities themselves, Ara Poghosyan, political scientist, said in an interview with Alpha News.

He noted that it is strange that some in Armenia are displeased with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statement that it is necessary to clarify whether Armenia intends to remain in the EAEU or not.

“If Russia was previously accused of forcibly keeping Armenia in the EAEU, now it is simply proposing to clarify the relationship and act within the framework of existing agreements,” Poghosyan said.

According to the political scientist, political statements do not always fully reflect the real political situation, but they do carry important signals.

“Russia is showing that it is not compelling Armenia to stay in the EAEU. At the same time, I believe that under current circumstances, remaining is in Armenia’s own interests. Armenia does not yet have fully formed alternatives, and Russia is not going to play a secondary role while Yerevan tries to normalize relations with the West and figure out its next steps,” Poghosyan concluded.
