Russia is showing the consequences of Armenia leaving the EAEU: Karen Igityan
The situation in Armenian-Russian relations is extremely complex and tense, and Moscow has already begun demonstrating the possible consequences of Armenia continuing its current political course. This was stated by Karen Igityan, a Caucasus expert, in a conversation with Alpha News.
According to him, restrictions on the import of Armenian goods and other obstacles being created are demonstrative steps showing what could happen if Armenia continues to distance itself from Russia and the EAEU.
“Russia has already begun showing what all of this could lead to. The fact that imports of Armenian goods to Russia are being halted or other problems are being created points directly to what could happen if Armenia definitively goes down the path Pashinyan is leading it on,” Igityan said.
The expert emphasized that the current measures are merely a small warning, just a minor demonstrative portion. In Igityan’s assessment, Armenia’s authorities continue to enjoy the economic benefits of EAEU membership while presenting these results as the outcome of their own policies.
“Pashinyan takes advantage of Armenia’s membership in the EAEU and attributes all the income the country receives to himself. In reality, over 10 years of EAEU membership, Armenia’s economy has grown by more than 2 to 2.5 times,” the Caucasus expert said.
He added that if Armenia’s current authorities continue the same policy, the existing economic mechanisms could be halted, leading to severe consequences for the country.
