When asked whether Armenia and Russia have reached consensus on the draft bill on Armenia’s accession to the European Union or whether Russia’s position remains the same as previously voiced by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk, Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova noted that this position is based on the laws of science, economics, and jurisprudence.
“The explanations that Mr. Overchuk gave are not political declarations. They were and are explanations of the obvious consequences that stem from certain steps. He did not make political, politically biased, or unrealistic statements. Negotiations imply an exchange of views on an issue, and that exchange did occur. Our position is based on realities, on laws, on the economy, and on understanding of legality and law. Of course, there are different politicians who will have their own views, but I believe this meeting and the negotiations made it possible to have a very frank, trust-based dialogue,” Maria Zakharova said.
