The topic of the Armenian Genocide is one of the few that unites the Armenian nation, regardless of political affiliation, genocide scholar Suren Manukyan told Alpha News.

“I believe that one of the main goals of state power or the elite is the formation of national harmony. This agenda is important for all states in general, and especially for the people, who are now experiencing difficult times like us. I believe that the primary task of our authorities should have been to prevent the introduction of such sensitive topics and ensure possible social consolidation. The topic of the Armenian Genocide is one of the few that unites the Armenian nation regardless of our political affiliation, our political and ideological differences, or where we live or what language we speak,” he emphasized.

According to Manukyan, it is surprising that topics that could once again split society were brought up ahead of April 24.

“This topic has always united the Armenian people. We have always managed to find common ground around it. It is surprising to me that ahead of April 24, topics are being brought up that could once again split society, since the statements they voice will certainly find a response or opposition, and there will be people who have the opposite opinion. So, is there a need to once again escalate the situation?” he concluded.
