There are many difficulties between Russia and Azerbaijan – Alexander Asafov

Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Alexander Asafov commented on the conflict situation between Russia and Azerbaijan related to law enforcement actions in Yekaterinburg against suspects accused of murdering Azerbaijani nationals.
“Let’s be objective and remember that all former republics of the Soviet Union, in one way or another, view their sovereignty as distancing from Russia. Everyone does this without exception—it’s only a matter of tone, mistakes, or reservations. If we look at certain statements by Georgian journalists that took place several years ago or statements made years ago by the deputy head of Kazakhstan’s administration on language policies, these statements were over the line. Unfortunately, people believe that in this way they are strengthening their sovereignty. This is certainly a mistake, but nevertheless this mistake is repeated time and again.
Turning to the current situation—indeed, there are many difficulties between Russia and Azerbaijan. Some are discussed; others are not. And here, of course, the Russian side would be more satisfied with Baku’s position if it spoke out not only in such situations but also in situations when Azerbaijani citizens who have acquired Russian citizenship committed some unpleasant acts—which, believe me, happens often enough,” he said.
