“There was no other option, we had to win”: Yuri Sakunts on his victory over the Azerbaijani

Armenian boxer Yuri Sakunts told Alpha News about the warm reception he received in Moscow, his victory over the Azerbaijani opponent and his plans for the future in the sport.

“I was met very warmly and cordially. It was a true expression of Armenian pride, love and unity. It felt as if I were in Yerevan. This warmth and kindness, after a 16-hour trip, made me feel as if I were in my native environment,” he said.

Sakunts had prepared for the fight, which took place on April 24 in Moscow, for a long time. According to him, since he was familiar with his opponent’s abilities, he did a great deal of work to prepare himself physically in the best possible way.

The athlete thanked the fight’s sponsor, Sarkis Tadevosyan, and the Armenians who supported him, noting that he had received words of support from all corners of the world.

“The excitement was enormous. I got calls from all over the world, and many people from Armenia called and said that we had to win this fight, there was no other option. We Armenians won this fight,” Sakunts said.

According to him, the victory over the Azerbaijani opponent evoked special feelings in him. Sakunts knocked out his opponent in the second round after several knockdowns.
