Ukraine is costing the United States dearly: Konstantin Blokhin
Konstantin Blokhin, political analyst and international commentator, commented to Alpha News on developments around the Ukraine conflict and the state of relations among the countries involved.
“The crisis between Washington and Kyiv is deepening under Trump, because the relationship between Trump and Zelensky didn’t work out from the start. For Trump, Ukraine is merely a bargaining chip in a big geopolitical game between Russia, the U.S. and China. Even more so, of course, Ukraine is costing the United States dearly. Since the start of the SMO alone, the United States has provided Ukraine with financial resources of $360 billion, according to Trump himself.
That is an astronomical sum, and with that money they still were not able to achieve the goals and tasks set before them. So it is obvious that, of course, it would be better for Trump to resolve this Ukrainian conflict altogether and reach an agreement, especially since he is not managing to extract any profit from Ukraine, it is impossible to mine rare earth metals in wartime, and it is hard to get that money back. So, of course, the only thing he can get is a certain kind of political prestige. If he resolves the Ukrainian conflict, he will definitely be Europe’s chief peacemaker, as he wants to be,” Blokhin believes.
In the expert’s view, there is a high probability that the U.S. may withdraw from the Ukrainian settlement process and begin restoring relations with Russia.
“I think that in any case, because of Europe’s support, it won’t be possible to resolve the conflict amicably right now. Most likely, the United States may still make a few more moves in this direction, in the Ukrainian settlement, but since it will all keep spinning its wheels, they may well simply withdraw from this settlement altogether and focus on stepping up Russian-American relations on a bilateral level. Just recently our special envoy Dmitriev said that new bilateral agreements between the U.S. and Russia would soon be announced. Because it is easier to reach agreement bilaterally than to negotiate with Ukraine plus the Europeans and so on,” the Alpha News interlocutor concluded.
