The inauguration ceremony of the newly elected president of Uruguay took place on March 1. Yamandu Orsi took office as President of the country. Alpha News had a conversation on this topic with Diego Karamanoukian, director of the Araks radio station.
“Yamandu Orsi represents the Uruguayan Broad Front party, which can be said to be the largest in the country. The change of power took place in accordance with democratic principles. The former center-right president, Luis Lacalle, calmly handed over power to Orsi. Why am I emphasizing this? Because Uruguay is considered one of the most democratic countries in South America. Orsi stated that his priority will be to improve the living standards of the poor and solve social problems. I would like to note that the Armenian president was also present at the inauguration ceremony,” Karamanoukian said.
When asked what caused the victory of the center-left force, he noted:
“Almost half a million people could not live on the salary paid by the previous government. There have been cases of corruption and scandalous incidents that have also affected the image of the ruling party and the coalition. Orsi led by a margin of 90,000 votes and won, but with his coming to power, Uruguay’s policy will not change. The new government does not even constitute a majority in the lower house of parliament.”
