Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Bogdan Bezpalko commented on the signing of a strategic agreement between Armenia and the United States. According to the expert, this contradicts Armenia’s policy of alliance with Russia in the military and economic fields. If the United States has now become a strategic partner for Armenia, in this situation it may mean preparation for certain events in the region.

“Russian officials reacted with restraint, stating that this is Armenia’s sovereign right, but in general it contradicts Armenia’s policy of alliance with Russia in the military and economic fields. If the United States is now a strategic partner for Armenia, then this means shifting to new directions, and in this situation, it may mean preparation for certain events in the region. The signing of this agreement and the increased interest of the United States in Armenia and the region will be followed by changes. Sooner or later, the question of Armenia’s presence in the CSTO and the Eurasian Economic Union will arise.

The economic trade turnover between Russia and Armenia is much higher than that of between the United States and Armenia. Goods from Armenia are unlikely to be sold in the US or the EU in such volumes as they are currently sold in Russia. This agreement is just a preference of the political Armenian elites, or following someone else’s will,” Bezpalko said.

According to the political scientist, the main goal of the United States will not be to strengthen Armenia or somehow raise the status of Armenia but to push Russia out of the region.

“Of course, Russia will react if, for example, Armenia announces the need to withdraw Russian armed forces from Gyumri and generally eliminate Russia’s military presence in Armenia. If it starts taking any actions in the economic or military fields, for example, inviting American troops to patrol or be deployed on the border with Azerbaijan. The problem is that Armenia is simply being used. The main goal of the United States will not be to strengthen Armenia or somehow raise the status of Armenia but to push Russia out of the region,” Bezpalko concluded.
