Israel’s initiative to recognize the Armenian Genocide should be viewed in the context of political interests, Hrach Varzhapetyan, a representative of the ARF Western Europe Central Committee, told Alpha News.

“We are not naive: they are recognizing the Genocide not for the sake of the Armenian nation or Armenia, but out of their own interests. But when those interests align with ours, we simply must welcome it,” he said.

According to Varzhapetyan, Israel is trying to send Turkey a political message, and this circumstance should be used in Armenia’s interests, without getting distracted by other issues.

He also criticized the approach taken by Armenia’s authorities, stressing that claims about the “militarization” of the Armenian Genocide issue are mistaken, since the main struggle should be directed against Turkish denial.

“Any opposing position on this issue would, in effect, serve the interests of Turkish policy and turn into a pro-Turkish statement,” Varzhapetyan stressed.
