Armenian leadership’s position is disappointing — Alexey Mukhin

 
Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Alexey Mukhin commented on Armenian-Russian relations and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s recent visit to Moscow.

“The position of the Armenian leadership, to say the least, is disappointing. It is difficult to explain it in terms of the partnership which Armenia has with Russia both in the CSTO, CIS, and other formats, especially the Eurasian Economic Community,” the expert said.

According to Mukhin, even though Pashinyan came to Moscow, he still synchronizes his plans with the Western countries.

“I had the impression that Nikol Pashinyan came to Moscow because he couldn’t not come. His absence would be a challenge to the formats in which he participates. However, he prefers to solve some regional issues with the European Union, France, and the US rather than with his immediate neighbors Azerbaijan and much less Russia,” Mukhin said.

Referring to the potential conclusion of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Alexei Mukhin said that its topicality had changed due to the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.

“The peace treaty is likely to be signed. As far as I understood, the Armenian side decided to concede. The ‘Zangezur corridor’ is a more subtle and controversial case. It’s not just the two parties that have an interest in this. So, the parties are under very strong pressure. Here a lot depends on geopolitics, on what situation China will find itself in and what situation Iran will end up in the near future. 

I believe ‘stagnation’ is caused by the very complicated situation in the Middle East. The countries have somewhat postponed, frozen the resolution of this conflict,” he concluded.
