Weakening Syria is necessary for Turkey and Israel – Artur Atayev
Russian political scientist Artur Atayev commented to Alpha News on Donald Trump’s statement that Turkey, which has wanted this for thousands of years, is behind the events in Syria.
“In fact, two states benefit from the current situation in Syria. The first is Israel, and the second is Turkey. This is what Turkish President Erdogan actually spoke about. In the current conditions, weakening Syria is simply a necessary component of development for both Israel and Turkey,” Atayev noted.
According to the expert, the Turkish factor has become one of the real mechanisms of political pressure on Bashar al-Assad.
“First of all, the Turkic factor is becoming political, because since 2011, the Turkish factor in the Syrian Arab Republic has become one of the real mechanisms of political pressure on Bashar al-Assad and the political elite as a whole. Second, it is a confrontation with Iran. Both Turkey and Israel are interested in this weakening of Iran. And the third component of why this is beneficial to Turkey is because this is Erdogan’s neo-Ottoman project. That is, he sees himself as a global, not Turkish, but Turkic leader. This is how he positions himself,” Atayev said.
