On October 31, the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly published a resolution describing last year’s parliamentary elections in Georgia as falsified and labeling the ruling party, “Georgian Dream,” a self-proclaimed authority. The Assembly condemned the violent suppression of peaceful protests in Tbilisi, the arbitrary arrests of demonstrators, journalists, and political leaders, and called on the authorities to immediately release all political prisoners.

The Armenian authorities stated that they abstained during the vote on this document, while the opposition did not participate at all. Alpha News discussed this topic with international affairs expert Andranik Hovhannisyan.

“Georgia’s position on this issue is objective. I believe it is unacceptable when foreign states, their representatives, and parliamentarians try to interfere in domestic political matters. If the European Union is so determined to defend human rights, democracy, and so on, then the question arises: why has the EU not expressed any position on this matter since 2020, when numerous protests took place in the Republic of Armenia, not to mention that people are still subjected to repressions, including clergymen? Moreover, when representatives of the opposition try to obtain assessments from representatives of EU member states, they hear the following: they have no right to interfere in Armenia’s internal political issues,” Hovhannisyan said.

According to the expert, the adoption of such a document on the part of Armenia is unacceptable.

“In the future, this may have quite a negative impact on relations between Yerevan and Tbilisi. I believe that the Armenian authorities, regardless of their neutral position during the adoption of this document, should not have allowed this to happen in Armenia in the first place. That is, from the very beginning they should have pointed out that there are many reasons why this document should not be adopted specifically in Yerevan. If you wish, there are 27 EU member states — adopt such documents there,” Hovhannisyan concluded.
