Historical role of Church must be respected – Eastern Diocese of Armenian Church of North America
December 20 2025, 12:10
The Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church of North America and the Diocesan Council issued a statement regarding the events in Armenia. They expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions between the state and the Church, emphasizing that both institutions, together with the Diaspora, are vital for the survival of the nation. The statement called for restraint, national unity, respect for Armenia’s Constitution and democratic processes, as well as the preservation of the autonomy and canons of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
The statement noted that in times of geopolitical uncertainty, national institutions must remain strong. The state is obliged to uphold democracy while maintaining a balance of security and harmony, and the Church must continue its mission of preserving identity and faith.
Particular concern was raised over the arrests of bishops and clergy, as well as threats against the Catholicos of All Armenians, which weaken the nation both within the country and abroad. The statement stressed that the Church has for centuries been the spiritual leader of the Armenian people, even under persecution and genocide. In such times, hope and strength are found in Christ and in the unity of the Church.
The Diocese urged the clergy and faithful to remain steadfast and prayerfully support Holy Etchmiadzin and the Catholicos of All Armenians, asking God for peace, wisdom, and protection for both the Church and the state.
