The Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) Board of Education has decided to develop and implement a Western Armenian Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program. The initiative has been welcomed by the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) – Glendale Chapter, which described it as an important outcome of years of sustained community advocacy and collaboration.
The program aims to promote academic excellence while fostering bilingualism and supporting the preservation of Western Armenian, a language classified by UNESCO as endangered.
ANCA Glendale praised the Board of Education for responding to the long-standing needs of the community and highlighted the contributions of community partners, including Glendale City Clerk Dr. Suzie Abajian, in advancing this effort.
Home to one of the largest Armenian communities outside of Armenia, Glendale strengthens its role as a leader in culturally responsive and inclusive public education through the adoption of this program. A rollout plan is expected to be presented in the coming months.
