Domestically, we are facing a unique situation, Armenia’s second president Robert Kocharyan said in his opening remarks at a press conference, addressing internal political realities.

“I cannot recall any elections in Armenia’s history where, during the campaign, issues of such nature were raised—such as Ararat versus Aragats. Never before has there been talk about protecting national identity, nor about safeguarding the unity of the Church. This situation may seem unusual, but it is also unique,” he said.

According to him, the opposition has broad potential for synchronizing its positions, making it possible to form large electoral blocs, since there is agreement on fundamental issues.

“Right now, we are in a unique geopolitical situation, where the law of force prevails—power determines everything. At the same time, we face a unique domestic political situation as we enter the pre-election period. Of these two circumstances, one works in favor of the authorities, the other in favor of the opposition. What the outcome will be, the elections will show,” Kocharyan concluded.
