Russian diplomacy cannot be deceived – Nikolay Silaev
Speaking with Alpha News, senior research fellow at the Institute for International Studies at MGIMO Nikolay Silaev emphasized that Armenian‑Russian relations have seriously deteriorated, and so far there are no visible efforts from official Yerevan to improve them—quite the opposite.
“Armenian‑Russian relations are seriously damaged. Judging by the statements being made during the already launched election campaign, the situation will likely get even worse. Russia has no intention of spoiling these relations. But unfortunately, the Armenian leadership apparently does. This has been evident in recent months, and even years. In my view, Russian diplomacy has done a great deal to try to pull bilateral relations out of this downward spiral. But so far, it has not succeeded. Efforts are needed from both sides. Sadly, no such efforts are visible from official Yerevan,” the expert noted.
According to Silaev, Armenian claims about a “hybrid war” are essentially a move against Moscow.
“When appeals are made to the European Union with an absolutely absurd, I would even say shameless claim that Russia is supposedly waging a hybrid war against Armenia—this is indeed a move against Russia, isn’t it? In Yerevan they know perfectly well that the EU is one of the most hostile forces toward Russia. They also know about Kaja Kallas: I am not evaluating her diplomatic abilities now, but she is among the politicians most strongly opposed to Russia. If you turn to her saying: ‘Help us, Russia is mistreating us,’ when in fact Russia is mistreating no one—this is a hostile act. It cannot be described otherwise. Yes, some may be misled by saying today that we want good relations with Russia, while tomorrow secretly negotiating with our enemies. But Russian diplomacy cannot be deceived in this way. We are experienced people. I do not consider myself a diplomat, but the Russian political class cannot be tricked like that. I do not understand the point of this attempt at all. If you have decided to break off relations, it is deeply regrettable for Russia. But if that is your choice, then let the voters be the ones to judge it,” Silaev emphasized.
