Not a single security mechanism is functioning today, said Sergey Melkonyan, candidate of historical sciences, analyst, and research fellow at APRI Armenia, speaking live on Alpha News.

“Today, both the authorities and the opposition are trying to understand how the situation around Armenia and at the global level will develop. The South Caucasus is caught in a sandwich: to the north, the Russia-Ukraine war is ongoing; to the south, there is war with our neighbors. The result is that not a single security mechanism is working. We have reached a point where great powers are unable to win wars,” he said.

When asked whether Turkey and Azerbaijan want an Armenia without security guarantors, Melkonyan was unequivocal: “Absolutely.”

“Ukraine, for instance, is seeking to incorporate a security guarantor mechanism into its overall treaty. Iran is trying to do the same, stating that it does not want a ceasefire but a peace treaty with guarantors. They understand that if the war ends without deterrence mechanisms in place, a third war is inevitable. The same will happen in our case, and in Ukraine’s,” the analyst concluded.
