Gideon Saar, Israel’s foreign minister, has announced that at the next government session he will present a resolution calling for Israel’s first official recognition of the Armenian Genocide, the Ynet portal reports.

It is noted that this was preceded by a statement by US President Donald Trump, who called Turkish President Erdogan his friend for “staying out of the conflict with Iran” and promised that there would be no confrontation between Israel and Turkey.

The draft resolution states that “based on a moral and historical duty, Israel recognizes the Genocide committed against the Armenian people in the final period of the Ottoman Empire.” It specifies that Israel must condemn the denial, minimization, or distortion of the historical truth relating to these events.

The explanatory notes to the resolution state that the Armenian Genocide began in April 1915 with the arrest, deportation, and murder of hundreds of Armenian intellectuals, leaders, and educated figures in Constantinople. After that, the Ottoman government began “the systematic extermination of the Armenian population.”

It is noted that 32 countries have recognized the Armenian Genocide in various forms, and it is stated that Israel must do so “in light of its moral and historical duty.”
