The current tensions in Armenian-Russian relations and their potential consequences for the economy and security are causing serious concern in Armenia’s border regions. A poll in Vayots Dzor shows that the majority of residents in the region consider the severing of ties with Russia a direct existential threat to Armenia.

One poll participant criticized Armenia’s possible Western foreign policy orientation, noting that without a Russian military presence the country could face the threat of a new genocide, and that expecting help from the US or Donald Trump is unrealistic.

“The Turks will invade the moment the 102nd military base is removed, and not a single Armenian will be left. Let them remember 1915. What has America done for Armenians so far?” one local resident remarked.

Respondents also expressed concern over the anticipated economic consequences. According to them, the deterioration of relations with Russia could result in Armenian agricultural products, wine, and mineral water losing their primary market.

“People are suffering, taking out loans, growing crops to earn next to nothing, and here we are picking a fight with the Russians. And then they say they don’t need our water, our crops, and won’t let us export,” one survey participant stressed.
