Kremlin doubts prospects of Armenian-Azerbaijani peace process: Karen Igityan

Russia is questioning whether the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace process can lead to real and lasting peace. This was stated by Caucasus expert Karen Igityan in a conversation with Alpha News, commenting on recent statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to the expert, Putin’s statements contain several important signals that help explain the Kremlin’s attitude toward the processes underway in the region.

“Putin said: let’s see whether freight volumes increase or not. In other words, for him this remains questionable for now. Second, if you want, we’ll leave Armenia altogether. That’s what he meant,” the Caucasus expert noted.

According to him, Putin’s statements show that the Kremlin does not consider the Armenian-Azerbaijani process to be a sufficient guarantee of lasting peace in the region.

“This means that the Kremlin believes the Armenian-Azerbaijani process will not bring peace, and that Azerbaijan will not allow Armenia to become a transit country and enjoy that status,” Karen Igityan emphasized.
