“Mr. Poghosyan, under your leadership, the Investigative Committee has become a ‘cudgel’ against political opponents. That is simply a fact,” Anna Grigoryan, an MP from the Armenia faction, said in the National Assembly, addressing Artur Poghosyan, Chairman of the Investigative Committee. In her speech, Grigoryan raised a number of concerns and questions about the work of law enforcement and the use of double standards.
Referring to the Investigative Committee’s official statements about family members of political figures, the opposition MP criticized the approach the agency has taken.
“You must answer to the public for intruding into a person’s private life and spreading such information, especially since this episode has not even been proven. When it suits you, you cite the secrecy of the investigation, and when it suits you, you put out statements like these. This was done for one purpose: to hurt a specific political figure, and the political motivation is obvious,” the MP said.
Raising the issue of selective prosecution, Anna Grigoryan drew attention to how differently law enforcement reacts to similar statements.
“If one citizen of Armenia says to another, ‘I will destroy you, I will bring you to your knees,’ does that constitute a crime or not?” the MP asked.
