Ruben Melikyan: ‘Berets’ are given the opportunity to act with impunity

Speaking with Alpha News, human rights activist Ruben Melikyan commented on the brute, rude, and disproportionate use of force by police and “berets” against peaceful demonstrators.

“This is not a new phenomenon in our reality. Red and black ‘berets’ are units of the Yerevan city administration, as well as internal troops. They have always been distinguished by such criminal behavior. This is not the first time. The reason for this is impunity,” the human rights activist said.

According to Ruben Melikyan, in such situations, it is necessary to initiate criminal proceedings very quickly.

“Today, for the first time, we witnessed the smallest step that could be taken. The powers of just one employee were terminated. This is only half a step forward when you need to be 10 steps ahead.
First of all, it is necessary to immediately initiate criminal proceedings, which should be carried out by an independent body. You know, sometimes there are no censored words to describe the behavior of these persons,” Ruben Melikyan concluded.
