Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Nikolai Starikov commented on the news that the Armenian parliament adopted in the first reading a bill on the start of the EU accession process.

“If we are talking about some political events, it is necessary to open the map and see where Armenia is located and where what is called the European Union today is located. And we will see that the first is very difficult to match with the second, or rather, it does not match at all. There can be no EU membership purely for geographical reasons. Armenia’s accession to the EU is mythical; it doesn’t really exist. There is a process, but there will never be a result. The orchestrators of this process in Armenia and European politicians are well aware of this. But I’m afraid that some parts of Armenian society still have some illusions. That is, this process exists only in words, so you can make up as many reasons as you want for it not to be implemented,” Starikov said.

According to the expert, it is impossible to be in the EU and the EAEU at the same time. “The Russian authorities always speak very softly and very tactfully, even in the most difficult situations. In other words, this is the diplomatic style of the current Russian government. When a similar situation arose on the territory of Ukraine, Russia clearly stated that it was impossible to be in the European Union with its customs regulations and at the same time be in the Eurasian Union,” Starikov concluded.
