Azerbaijan is not offering a constructive solution to the conflict with Armenia: MEP
Per Clausen, a Member of the European Parliament from Denmark, told Alpha News that in his view, the EU’s energy agreement with Azerbaijan is extremely problematic.
“This country not only systematically violates human rights, but also offers no constructive solution to the conflict with Armenia. Therefore, in my view, Europe should gradually move away from purchasing Azerbaijani gas. I very much hope for this, although I am not certain that the European Commission is ready to take such a step. The main argument is the concern that if Azerbaijani gas is rejected, Europe will find it difficult to quickly identify alternative sources of supply. This is precisely why I believe the EU must actively work toward achieving energy independence and reducing its dependence on gas imports from countries whose political regimes run counter to European values.
In my view, it would be both correct and strategically important for Europe to reduce its dependence on Azerbaijani gas as soon as possible,” he said.
