Speaking with Alpha News, Siranush Sahakyan, President of the Center for International and Comparative Law, commented on the sham trial of 19 Armenian hostages in Baku.

“If a decision is made to release the prisoners, I do not rule out that the extradition of the ‘criminals’ to their country of citizenship for further punishment could be used as a mechanism. This is possible, and Azerbaijan will decide not just to release them but, based on humanitarian or other considerations, to hand over the ‘criminals’ to Armenia to serve their sentences here.

As for those individuals who are not in Azerbaijan and are being prosecuted on fabricated criminal cases, this is where Azerbaijan will try to begin cooperation with Armenia. However, I believe this intention is also purely political in nature,” she said.

Siranush Sahakyan also touched upon the pogroms against Armenians that took place in Baku.

“As we know, crimes, murders, and torture against Armenians took place in Azerbaijan, in connection with which the European Court made decisions and obliged Azerbaijan to conduct an investigation in its country and punish the criminals.

An important component of an effective investigation is the involvement of the victims, while all of them or their legal successors are in Armenia, and communication with them must be ensured through international cooperation,” Siranush Sahakyan concluded.
