Armenia’s parliamentary elections were held amid unprecedented pressure on the opposition and interference from the West, said Maria Zakharova, official spokesperson of the Russian MFA.

“In Armenia, parliamentary elections were held amid unprecedented pressure on the opposition and interference from the West, primarily the EU,” Zakharova said in a comment regarding the elections held in Armenia.

The RA authorities flagrantly violated procedures during the parliamentary elections, Zakharova noted.

“The entire election campaign and the voting process itself took place in an atmosphere of harsh repression […] against opposition parties and movements, their activists and supporters. The Armenian Apostolic Church, traditionally held in deep reverence in the country, also fell under the steamroller of persecution. All of this represents Yerevan’s flagrant trampling of democratic principles and procedures for holding free elections,” she said.
