The EU monitoring mission in Armenia (EUMA) plays a crucial role in terms of preventing a renewed possible aggression by Azerbaijan, Spanish MP Jon Inarritu said in an interview with Armenpress.
“Taking into account the current occupation of Armenia’s territories by Azerbaijan, the presence of the EU monitoring mission has vital significance for preventing further escalation in the delimitation process and advancing diplomacy,” he said.
According to Inarritu, the EU’s decision to extend the mandate of the mission is a significant step for strengthening regional stability and peace.
“The EU council’s decision on extending the EU monitoring mission’s mandate for another two years in Armenia is a significant step for strengthening stability and peace in the South Caucasus. The mission plays a crucial role in monitoring the situation along the Armenian border with Azerbaijan, ensuring compliance with international law requirements and contributing to the peaceful dialogue between the two peoples,” the Spanish MP said.
He noted that the extension of the EUMA mandate also contributes to peace and security beyond the South Caucasus region.
“This decision reflects the EU’s commitment to support Armenia’s efforts on strengthening democratic governance, ensuring the rule of law and sustainable development. Furthermore, it is in line with the EU’s broader strategic goals on ensuring peace and security in the South Caucasus and beyond,” he added.
