On the eve of his working visit to Azerbaijan, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated, “Karabakh is an integral part of the territory of Azerbaijan and we respect this fact.” Speaking about the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Iranian President noted that Tehran’s principled position has always been to respect the sovereignty, rights and territorial integrity of the countries.

Alpha News spoke to Hayk Khalatyan, editor-in-chief of the news agency in Moscow, on this topic.

“I did not see anything new in the Iranian President’s statements. This is Iran’s traditional stance on relations with Armenia and Azerbaijan. He always emphasizes that problems should be resolved peacefully, respecting each other’s territorial integrity. And although Tehran congratulated Azerbaijan after the Artsakh war, it has always demonstrated a pro-Armenian stance on issues related to Syunik. But you know, the most important thing is not Tehran’s statements, but whether Tehran will move from words to actions if Azerbaijan, supported by Turkey and Israel, takes extreme measures against Armenia in order to get a corridor,” he noted.

The expert emphasized that Iran might hesitate to enter a war, viewing it as a trap that could provide its adversaries with an opportunity for a direct strike.

“That is why Iran is doing everything possible to prevent such a scenario. It sends messages to Azerbaijan, showing that it opposes drastic actions against Armenia,” Khalatyan concluded.
