Israeli government’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide came as a surprise to everyone: Bedik Kirakosyan
The State of Israel’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide was an unexpected step. This was stated to Alpha News by Bedik Kirakosyan, a representative of the Armenian community of Jerusalem.
“It was a surprise to all of us, we didn’t expect that Israel would one day recognize the Armenian Genocide. Let’s be honest: this wasn’t done out of love for Armenians, but is linked to the tension between Turkey and Israel. With this move, Netanyahu is responding to Erdogan,” he noted, adding that regardless of the motives, this decision by Israel deserves recognition.
Kirakosyan also expressed the view that this issue will not cause problems within Israel, since previously the initiative for recognition was mainly put forward by the opposition, whereas now the situation has changed.
“We hope that the recognition of the Armenian Genocide will happen very soon,” he said.
As a reminder, the Israeli government unanimously approved Foreign Minister Gideon Saar’s proposal to recognize the Armenian Genocide. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he supports this measure. Following the government’s approval, the document must be sent to Israel’s parliament — Knesset.
