The reaction of Nikol Pashinyan, Prime Minister of Armenia, to the Eurasian Economic Union’s report on the consequences of suspending the country’s membership in the union is aggressive and unfounded. This was stated by Maria Zakharova, Spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a briefing.
According to her, such rhetoric diverts public attention from domestic problems and shifts responsibility onto external forces. The diplomat also said the criticism ignores the economic consequences of the course towards rapprochement with the European Union and the possible damage to Armenia’s traditional ties with Russia.
“In general, all this aggressive, emotional rhetoric that does not correspond to reality, once again, is not hurting us. It misleads Armenian society, the people of Armenia. Such rhetoric is built on ignoring economic realities and, moreover, on ignoring assessments of the course towards joining the European Union to the detriment of traditional Russian-Armenian ties,” the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website quotes her as saying.
