Armenia’s agriculture last year did not restore output to the 2022 level

The problem of food production contains a security component for Armenia. Despite the economic growth registered in the country in recent years, food production as well as agricultural production has declined.

In January-December 2024, for example, gross agricultural production increased by 1.6%. The growth rate in agriculture is quite modest when viewed in the context of double-digit growth in the trade, construction, or service industries.

But the whole problem is that even 1.6 percent growth does not reflect the real picture. The problem is that in January-December 2023, agriculture was in decline by 0.3 percent. For a clearer picture, it should be noted that although in 2024 there was a growth of 1.6% in this sphere, the gross domestic product in absolute terms did not reach the figures of 2022, which exceeded AMD 1 trillion. The same picture emerges in terms of food production. According to the final data of 2024, a rather significant growth of 5.6% was registered. Here again, following the same logic, the growth is compared to a 5.3% decline in 2023.

And the output of almost AMD 7.2 billion in 2024 is only slightly higher than the output of AMD 609 billion in 2022.

It turns out that these growth rates in areas important for food security are positive and pleasing, but even they do not indicate a significant economic recovery or a positive shift in the economy.
