Renowned chess player Judit Polgar declines to become President of Hungary

Renowned Hungarian chess player and grandmaster Judit Polgar has declined a proposal by Peter Magyar, the country’s Prime Minister, to put forward her candidacy for the post of President. The chess player announced this on her Facebook.

“I highly value the gesture of the Prime Minister, who, despite his party’s significant parliamentary weight, proposed that an independent candidate, above party politics, take the post of President,” she wrote.

Polgar is the only woman ever to have ranked among the world’s top 10 strongest chess players. Her best result was eighth place with a rating of 2735 in July 2005. Above her at that time were the strongest chess players in the world from various eras: Vladimir Kramnik, Viswanathan Anand, and Garry Kasparov.
