At the upcoming parliamentary elections in Armenia on June 7, the question of national identity is the greatest concern for the diaspora. Aram Shakhnazaryan, an Armenian diaspora figure, said this in a conversation with Alpha News.

“In light of these elections, the question of identity is the biggest concern in the diaspora. I would say that 90–95 percent of diaspora communities are worried that the current authorities have put Armenian identity at risk,” he noted.

According to Shakhnazaryan, the authorities are attempting to edit and distort Armenian identity, rewrite Armenian history, erase historical memory, and devalue the symbols and values that embody the identity of the Armenian people.

“If this government stays and continues this policy, the consequences for the diaspora could be truly catastrophic. Diaspora communities sustain their existence precisely through these symbols, historical memory, and the foundations of identity,” Shakhnazaryan concluded.
