Armenia chose the European path long ago. That is what Viktor Soghomonyan, founder of Alpha Media House and doctor of political sciences, said on air at Alpha News.

“In essence, what we are dealing with is the completion or culmination of a process that the Armenian side began long ago. This is about the European path that Armenia chose. It is clear that this path runs contrary to Russia. There was an approach according to which there is a structure: Russia, with which Armenia does not wish to have relations. Of course, we work within the EAEU, but we have nothing to do with the CSTO. From the outset, an attitude was formed in which the European path was presented as the alternative. Armenia embarked on this path long ago, while the Russian side calmly watched what was happening,” Viktor Soghomonyan said, commenting on the joint statement by EAEU leaders in Astana regarding Armenia.

According to him, from a political science standpoint, it follows that Nikol Pashinyan must step down.

“Imagine how many complex issues we have been discussing all this time, Armenian-Turkish relations, Armenian-Azerbaijani issues, the Artsakh problem, the question of the coat of arms. Now the EAEU and Russia’s ultimatums have become a serious new problem, for which there is essentially one obvious solution which is to prevent Pashinyan’s re-election. If there were no elections, one could say that Nikol Pashinyan resigns and Armenia undergoes a legitimate and peaceful transfer of power. In that case, by the morning of June 8, these problems simply would not exist, because the recipient of the ultimatum would not have been re-elected. That is, the only political force in Armenia that claims EU accession is the right path would no longer be in power. In that scenario, a number of issues, including agreements with Turkey and Azerbaijan, and those related to the resettlement of 300,000 Azerbaijanis, would no longer be on the agenda. On the whole, today we witnessed Pashinyan’s geopolitical fiasco,” Viktor Soghomonyan stressed.
