Trump needs to wind down the war with Iran before the midterms: Aleksey Chernyaev
Aleksey Chernyaev, political scientist and expert on US affairs, commented to Alpha News on the situation surrounding the war between the US and Iran and possible agreements between the two countries. According to the expert, it is now critically important for Donald Trump to end the active phase of the military operation before the elections, since a continuation of the conflict could negatively affect the Republicans’ results.
“In fact, Trump is in an absolutely critical situation regarding his election campaign, because all the Republican Party’s political strategists and consultants are pointing out that in order to perform more or less successfully in the elections, the active phase of the war with Iran needs to be ended, and this military activity needs to be wound down altogether. Otherwise, the results in the elections will be very disappointing for the Republicans,” Chernyaev said.
In the political scientist’s view, the current arrangements with Iran may prove temporary, but it is important for Trump right now to demonstrate at least some interim result to voters.
“Having found himself in this situation, Trump is trying to maneuver somehow. It’s clear that the value of all these agreements with Iran is small. In all likelihood, after some time the Americans will effectively abandon them again, but right now, ahead of the elections, they need to present at least some interim results. In other words, the Americans and Trump are prepared to temporarily give the impression that the US is willing to accept even what it previously considered unacceptable, Iran’s nuclear program, in exchange for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the resulting eventual drop in gasoline prices in the US,” Chernyaev concluded.
