Trump’s final defeat will come in the next US presidential election: Movses Ghazaryan
Movses Ghazaryan, a political scientist and international affairs commentator, commented to Alpha News on the reasons for the US Republican Party’s defeat in the midterm congressional elections and how it will affect the US administration’s policies.
“The Republicans’ defeat in both chambers of Congress will, of course, also affect US foreign policy, especially on Russia. At the very least, Mr. Trump will increasingly have to align his foreign policy with the expectations of his opponents in Congress and, of course, with the expectations of his opponents within the Western community, in European capitals. However, this is still not the final defeat for Trump and the American right. The final defeat for the American right led by Trump can come only in the next election, the presidential one. But this will affect the balance of power in decision-making to some extent.
And the only thing Trump can take advantage of inside the US is the weakness of the Democratic Party’s leaders and elites. And also the fact that the Democrats are not currently in a condition to truly mobilize against Trump very broad segments of the population and very broad groups of elites who may fear the US becoming authoritarian. Even with this defeat, Trump’s complete weakening is not yet a foregone conclusion. The Republicans, the Trumpists and the activists of the ‘America First’ movement can lose definitively only in the next election. If the White House changes hands, that will truly affect the balance of power,” Ghazaryan believes.
The political scientist sees several reasons why the Republicans were defeated in both chambers of Congress.
“Building an authoritarian political system is what affected the US electorate. The second factor, I think, is social policy. We see that even Mr. Mamdani’s rise to power as mayor of New York City shows that there is a very strong demand for social justice in the US. And this, by the way, is not the first warning sign in this direction. And the third, no less important factor is that, to some extent, Trump has lost both the support and the consolidation of conservative-minded Americans. That’s the point. Trump’s many conflicts with Elon Musk and other right-wing conservative leaders have alienated a very large, very significant informal coalition of right-wing leaders among American elites and in American society as a whole. In other words, he has lost the base that could have supported him,” the expert concluded.
