Malek Dudakov, a political scientist specializing in American studies, spoke to Alpha News about the potential involvement of the United States in the conflict between Iran and Israel. According to the expert, there is currently an intense struggle in Washington between the “hawks” and the isolationists.

“We see uncertainty within the Trump administration. On one side, there are the hawks who would like to start bombing Iran right now, and ideally, to change the regime in Tehran and try to bring someone pro-Western, pro-American to power. On the other side, there are isolationist pragmatists who, on the contrary, fear that this conflict will lead to an uncontrolled escalation. If the Americans get involved, it will be extremely difficult to get out of it, which will undermine the US position—not only in the Middle East but globally. Therefore, there is now a very serious struggle between the hawks and the isolationists in Washington. There is a deep divide in American politics.

In my opinion, Trump’s latest statements about a two-week pause indicate that he and his team are nevertheless aware of the risks of escalation and are trying to buy some time. I believe Trump’s task now is to strengthen the US negotiating position. It’s quite possible that they will try to come to some kind of agreement with Iran during these two weeks, and then Trump will be able to declare himself a ‘peacemaker’ who managed to de-escalate the situation. If this does not happen, if the American and Iranian delegations fail to find common ground, then I would not rule out strikes on targets in Iran. That is, the probability of an attack certainly exists,” Dudakov noted.
