Armenia is an obstacle for Turkey and Azerbaijan, Turkologist Varuzhan Geghamyan told Alpha News.

“We are dealing with the Armenian-Turkish conflict, one side of which is represented by Turkey and Azerbaijan. These states are pursuing one big goal. They want to turn the South Caucasus, if not into a region that is completely under their control, then at least into a territory under their influence. That is, to make the South Caucasus an area of influence. Naturally, there is one big obstacle on the way to achieving this goal—Armenia, both due to geography and geopolitical circumstances. In fact, after 2022, Armenia found itself in a much more vulnerable position, which allows Turkey and Azerbaijan to get the most of it,” the Turkologist noted.

Varuzhan Geghamyan recalled the statement of the Turkish politician that now is the time to get the most out of Armenia.

“It is no coincidence that in the summer of 2022, the former Turkish Foreign Minister, former Prime Minister, and now opposition figure Ahmet Davutoglu, in one of his interviews, very aptly stated what Turkey is doing in relation to Armenia at the moment and that the time has come to get the most out of Armenia. That is, seeing that favorable conditions have now been created, Turkey and Azerbaijan are trying to get everything from Armenia to neutralize the Armenian political factor in this region, increasing Turkish influence,” Varuzhan Geghamyan said.

Referring to the events in Tavush, the Turkologist warned that the issue will not end there, since everything that is happening is a prelude to the operation to surrender the territories.

“Tavush is only one of the links in this chain, much weaker compared to Artsakh, the strongest link, which, unfortunately, no longer exists. Compared to Artsakh, Tavush is a weak link, but compared, for example, to Syunik or Tigranashen, it is still the strongest link. If we manage to save it, the next links will be protected. That’s why we need to understand that the issue is not limited to Tavush. The next stage of surrender and big losses begins,” Varuzhan Geghamyan concluded.
