What will happen to Armenia’s economy outside the EAEU? Agnesa Khamoyan demands a clear risk assessment

Agnesa Khamoyan, member of the National Assembly from the opposition Armenia faction, addressed Narek Hovakimyan, Deputy Minister of Economy, who was presenting the EAEU-Indonesia trade agreement, at a session of parliament. She expressed concern over statements by the authorities about a possible withdrawal from the EAEU and demanded a professional risk assessment for the national economy.

“Frankly speaking, the situation is somewhat surreal, since Armenia, figuratively speaking, is five minutes away from leaving the EAEU. At the political level, statements are being made suggesting that the economic damage related to exports is a problem not for Armenia, but for the EAEU. Nevertheless, what is the basis for the necessity of this agreement, and how many member states have already ratified it?” the lawmaker said.

Khamoyan stressed that the relevant agency must provide a clear and professional assessment.

“Can you finally present your position on the EAEU as Deputy Minister of Economy? We are familiar with all the political statements, and your direct superior is also quite a political figure. But from the standpoint of purely economic calculations, we would like to know what will happen to Armenia’s economy if we hypothetically consider withdrawal or exclusion from the EAEU? Do we have an alternative to the EAEU? Could the European market become such an alternative?” she concluded.
