Signing of Armenia-Azerbaijan peace treaty will not happen soon – Dmitry Zhuravlev

Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Dmitry Zhuravlev commented on the negotiation process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“This topic is too sensitive for Armenia and Azerbaijan. It is not easy to make concessions even if you want to, let alone if you do not want to. So the final result, I think, is unlikely to be too good for Armenia because, of course, Aliyev is the recognized leader of Azerbaijan, but he can hardly go against the opinion of his public. That is, he can make concessions in a very limited amount, which is why the agreement was not signed. Azerbaijan cannot concede too much.

Neither can Armenia. Both sides are very much limited by their public opinion. I do not expect the signing of a peace treaty to happen soon. As long as there were general declarative documents, it was easy to sign them. But when there are treaties with some specific content, it is very difficult to sign them. Frankly speaking, I did not even expect the general documents to be signed so easily,” Zhuravlev said.

According to the expert, the Americans need those who will be oriented towards them to win in this dispute.

“The Americans, first of all, need the road from East to West to function. Secondly, the Americans need those who will be oriented towards them to win in this dispute. Today Armenia is ready to be oriented towards the West; Azerbaijan is less ready. There is a strategic goal to build a transportation corridor from India to Europe, and there is a tactical goal to weaken Russia’s influence in the South Caucasus,” Zhuravlev concluded.
