Russian political scientist Alexander Asafov shared his opinion with Alpha News regarding the drone attacks across Russia and their possible impact on the negotiations on Ukraine in Istanbul.

“Operation Spider Web, as it was called by the Kyiv regime, is certainly connected to the negotiations. Here one can see an attempt to put pressure on Russia, to achieve a refusal to negotiate and to strengthen one’s own position. However, despite the unpleasant blow, this does not affect the negotiation process itself, since the negotiations are a political process rather than a terrorist or sabotage operation. Of course, there are many interpretations, including those of Western analysts, who perceive the situation differently. However, in my opinion, it is impossible to influence Russia’s position in this way. The only thing that can be achieved by such actions is to weaken your own position and increase the level of demands from Russia. These demands are based on international legislation, international law, existing international agreements, and those points that were agreed upon earlier,” the expert noted.

According to the political scientist, Russia’s response to Ukraine’s actions will be balanced and rational.

“As for a possible response, there is no need to assume the role of the General Staff or the Supreme Commander-in-Chief. The proportionality and composition of the response are determined by numerous factors, rather than an emotional desire to take revenge or react instantly. In all six strategic areas of military operations, the Russian army holds the initiative, and this is a clear indicator of the actual state of affairs. Of course, the blow is unpleasant, but it does not change the overall picture. We will find out how the Ministry of Defense and the Supreme Commander-in-Chief decide to respond. According to some estimates, a response is expected, but, in my opinion, it must be carefully calculated—not driven by emotions, but based on a rational analysis of all the relevant circumstances,” Asafov concluded.
