Campaign against church is “the final nail in the coffin” of Armenian state – Timofey Yermakov
Speaking with Alpha News, Russian war correspondent Timofey Yermakov commented on the Prime Minister’s attacks against the Armenian Apostolic Church and emphasized that the Church should lead the fight against Pashinyan.
“The method by which states were destroyed in almost any country consists of the collapse of state and spiritual institutions. In general, in theory, they should have started with this, but since the Armenian state is somewhat specific—especially in contrast to Russia or Ukraine, which is already ceasing to exist before our eyes—they got to the Church at the very end. That is, first the morale of the people was suppressed by a shameful defeat in the war, which claimed a large number of lives, and almost every Armenian family was in tragedy. But since the society was quite spiritual, it was impossible to shake its spiritual values. Now, when the people are already broken, they are, roughly speaking, hammering the final ‘nail into the coffin’ of the Armenian national self-consciousness. By self-consciousness I do not mean nationalism, but what holds the morale of the people. And for Armenians, above all, this force is the Church, because there is nowhere else to turn,” Yermakov noted.
According to the expert, Western forces use any dirty manipulations to discredit the foundations of nation states.
“Look at how Westerners generally act in other countries, in fact, they are now doing the same thing with the Armenian Church. The personality of the Catholicos is no longer untouchable, they can pour dirt on him, and pour it directly from the parliamentary podium. They can insult him and throw various accusations, which the Catholicos will then have to refute. And they will continue to throw more, that is, now is actually one of the last stages of the collapse of Armenian self-consciousness. Now the Armenian Church is returning, by and large, to its origins. At first, the Christian Church was persecuted, and if we are talking about tradition, then it is worth remembering the tradition of the fight. I am not saying that all is lost, I am talking about the trends we see now, and what this can lead to. If the Catholicos really wants to remain the head of the Church and preserve his Church and also avoid this disgrace, then considering that no one can lead, unfortunately, the fight against Pashinyan, the Catholicos should do it. Now, by and large, the trust of the people and the salvation of the Armenian nation in principle are in his hands,” the correspondent emphasized.
