Azerbaijan’s main goal is to weaken Russia’s influence in our region, international affairs expert Andranik Hovhannisyan said in an interview with Alpha News.

“Azerbaijan’s main goal is, first of all, to weaken Russia’s influence in our region, and recent disagreements very clearly confirm this. In addition, another main goal is for the ‘Zangezur corridor’ to be open, but not under Armenia’s control. Azerbaijan initially agreed that the Russian Federal Security Service would exercise control there, but later abandoned this idea, since the Artsakh issue was resolved. Artsakh is now completely occupied, and Azerbaijan no longer needs Russia’s mediation. Therefore, trying to maintain a balance in foreign policy, Azerbaijan agreed to the presence of US troops,” Hovhannisyan said.

Speaking about the position of Russia and Iran on this issue, the expert emphasized that Moscow and Tehran are not interested in the presence of US troops in the region.

“Does Russia want the US troops, with whom it is in competition, to be stationed in Armenia, essentially next to the North Caucasus? I don’t believe Russians are interested in this, and the same applies to Iran. Iran was recently bombed by the United States, and these tense relations have been going on for decades. Is Iran interested in having representatives of the United States next to its border? What we are witnessing now is a reality in which steps are being taken that run counter to the interests of both Russia and Iran. And all this is happening in relation to states with which we have very close economic ties and cooperation in the security sphere,” the expert concluded.
