Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political analyst Pavel Danilin commented on the meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk in Yerevan.

According to Danilin, Overchuk’s visit sends a clear signal that Russia views Armenia as a strategic partner and hopes to maintain cooperation within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

“Russia considers Armenia an ally, and when Russian Deputy Prime Minister Overchuk travels to Yerevan to meet with Armenia’s Prime Minister, it sends a strong message that we see this country as a partner and wish to preserve cooperation within the EAEU. That said, we do have some concerns regarding Armenia—for example, how well its new political course aligns with the agreements within the EAEU. I’d like to remind everyone that the key issue with Ukraine in 2013 was that its accession to the EU would have completely undermined the customs union it was part of. So naturally, we hope that Pashinyan’s actions and his agreements with Azerbaijan and the United States do not lead to a similar situation,” Danilin said.
