Many of Caucasus’s problems are result of British interference – Dmitry Zhuravlev
Speaking with Alpha News, Russian political scientist Dmitry Zhuravlev commented on the potential consequences of the clash of interests between London and Washington in the South Caucasus region.
Commenting on the recent announcement of a strategic partnership between the United Kingdom and Azerbaijan, Zhuravlev stated that Britain is attempting to reclaim the influence it once held in the South Caucasus throughout much of the 19th century.
“Many of the Caucasus’s problems are the result of British interference. Right now, Britain simply wants to revive its role as a global political operator, with a particular focus on the South Caucasus. They lack the resources for this, but they have the skills. They know how to play off one another, deceive, and confuse; they’re brilliant at it. And that’s why the British are so active there now,” the expert said.
“The interests of Britain and the US are currently misaligned. They don’t really align in principle, and the divide has deepened—especially now, with Trump pursuing one strategy and the British another. Finding common ground is extremely difficult, if not impossible. I believe the intrigues in the South Caucasus will increase dramatically. That is, the British will obstruct the Americans, and the Americans will obstruct the British. Unfortunately, this will have a negative impact on people, because by hindering each other, they will undermine the economic and social situation in the South Caucasus countries,” Zhuravlev concluded.
