Speaking with Alpha News, political scientist and military expert Pyotr Kolchin commented on the visit of US Vice President JD Vance to Armenia and Azerbaijan.

According to the expert, Vance’s visit will be tied to the American presence near Iran’s borders, which creates certain risks for both Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“Vance’s visit takes on new significance against the backdrop of escalating relations between Tehran and Washington. For the US, the South Caucasus is becoming an interesting region primarily in terms of military interests; the economy in this case is secondary.
The priority for the American side right now is pressure on Iran, so it should be expected that Vance’s visit will be tied precisely to this issue — the issue of American presence on Iran’s northern frontiers. This, in turn, carries certain risks for both Armenia and Azerbaijan,” Kolchin said.

According to the political scientist, Armenia should not expect economic benefits, as Trump’s team is focusing on Azerbaijan.

“Yerevan, in this situation, should not expect economic benefits or political advantages. Trump’s team has repeatedly shown that dialogue with Azerbaijan, as an oil-producing country, is a higher priority. Therefore, any communications and agreements in the South Caucasus will be built by the US in Aliyev’s interests and with regard to Baku’s position — as was already the case with the well-known Washington agreements, which took into account all of Aliyev’s wishes,” Kolchin concluded.
