Alexander Krylov, chief research fellow at the Primakov National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO), commented to Alpha News on the news that Gennady Zyuganov, leader of the CPRF and State Duma deputy, had called for a ban on Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s entry into Russia.

“There is essentially nothing new here, this has been said many times before. Gennady Andreyevich Zyuganov is expressing a widely held view, both among Russian politicians and in society at large, that Armenia’s leadership is pursuing a hostile policy toward Russia and has provided a platform for anti-Russian statements,” the political scientist noted.

The expert noted that providing a venue in Yerevan for anti-Russian statements is perceived in Moscow as a show of support for the position of the Ukrainian president, who had previously made Russophobic remarks.

“The statements made by Ukrainian President Zelensky were bellicose and highly Russophobic, and no comment was forthcoming from Armenia’s official authorities. This is therefore being interpreted as alignment with the Ukrainian president’s position, and is becoming an additional irritant in Armenian-Russian relations, especially on the eve of elections in Armenia. I think there will be many more statements from Russian politicians, deputies, and public figures,” Krylov emphasized.
