Armenia-Azerbaijan corridor could boost regional trade and U.S. interests: Rubio

Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that a new transit corridor linked to the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process could transform Armenia into a regional trade hub and create economic opportunities for American businesses.
Speaking before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Rubio described the TRIPP transit project as “the anchor” of the emerging peace framework between Armenia and Azerbaijan but argued that its significance extends far beyond conflict resolution. According to Rubio, the corridor has the potential to “revolutionize Armenia’s strategic location” and position the country as a central hub for trade across the South Caucasus and beyond.
Rubio said the project would address Azerbaijan’s long-standing demand for reliable transit access and needs while expanding trade links across the South Caucasus and Central Asia. He argued that the corridor could help move energy resources, minerals, and goods toward Western markets, reducing dependence on routes through Russia, China, and Iran.
The secretary also described the agreement as part of a broader expansion of U.S.-Armenia relations, which he said had remained largely stagnant for many years. The new framework, he argued, opens the door to deeper economic cooperation and a stronger American presence in a strategically important region.
The secretary said the United States hopes to encourage private-sector investment in the corridor’s infrastructure and logistics network, describing the initiative as both a peace-building measure and an opportunity to deepen U.S.-Armenia economic ties.
